Jordan Selig Featured on Bisnow’s Building in America’s Innovation Capital Panel

Jordan Selig, Martin Selig Real Estate’s (MSRE) managing director, recently spoke at Bisnow’s Construction and Development 2018 conference on their New Concepts and Practices for the Dynamic Age panel.

Along with Kevin Conroy of Blue Rooster Development Partners, Gary Chubb of Swinerton Builders, and Josh Nasvik of Polaris Pacific, Jordan discussed Seattle’s rapid growth in recent years and how developers will move into the next decade.

“We’re living in an amazing region full of technology and growth,” said panel moderator Matthew Miller, of Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. “[Our panelists are] a group of really innovative people who are bringing new ideas to development and construction.”

The changing nature of the workspace — including remote work, coworking spaces, and new technologies — was a main topic of discussion.

Jordan discussed the ongoing WeWork and WeLive project at Third & Lenora, which will include 12 stories of WeWork space and an additional 22 stories of WeLive space.

With a new generation of professionals moving into the workforce, Jordan explained, it is important to adapt to meet their needs. She discussed MSRE’s diversified tenant base, and how the company’s long-held commitment to client satisfaction has not changed in working with up-and-coming businesses and a younger generation of tenants.

“Millennials have different priorities from previous generations,” she said. “The most important thing is to listen to whomever you are talking to and hear their needs. It doesn’t matter how old they are or what kind of company they’re running.”

Sustainable development was another prominent topic during the panel. Panelists discussed why sustainable construction and development are crucial to reduce emissions, take care of the beautiful city we live in, and create comfortable spaces for Seattle’s residents and workforce.

As someone who had a hand in creating the updated Living Building Pilot program, Jordan explained how the new legislation will create an opportunity for developers to build additional square footage in exchange for adherence to strict sustainability standards — creating an environmentally responsible and profitable opportunity for developers.

She also discussed MSRE’s commitment to sustainability in their new developments and explained several state-of-the-art features in the works at 400 Westlake. This building will be energy net-positive, collect and recycle water, and feature high ventilation rates plus plenty of natural light exposure.

“400 Westlake will be energy net-positive, solar-powered, and sustainably designed, qualitatively and quantitatively,” Jordan said. “Sustainability is not only about conservation; it’s also about comfort – t’s about what your tenants feel.”
